Getting into Spring

Spring has sprung, the weather is (slowly) warming up. Here are some our favourite Hertfordshire family cycle routes to explore.

Broxbourne Wood Sculture Trail

This 17.5km historical figure of eight route is great for varied cycling abilities, as it is relatively flat, and has a pathway and a boardwalk running throughout.

See how many oak carved sculptures your family can spot on the way, and keep an eye out for homemade dens within the trees.

Cole Green Way

Running from Hertford to Welwyn Garden City, this former railway line is great for countryside, waterways, and gentle meandering through greenery.

The rural link is disability accessible at various points, and links three major Hertfordshire towns, so is regularly used as a cycle commuter route, too.

Hertford and Ware Common

The 8km route winds alongside the Lee River, all the way up to Rye House. Whilst the river is actually an artificial waterway, that was implemented in 1613, it is very much a contemporary nature spot, and home to many uniquely designed canal boats.

The route is home to a variety of wildlife, including eels, herons, cattle, and even the odd paddle boarder and wild swimmer.

Ryes Meads Discovery

This relatively flat route takes you through a wonderous nature reserve, consisting of three lakes, which are home to an abundance of wildlife.

This wetlands reserve is run by the RSPB and offers fantastic opportunities for spotting a whole host of wetland birds, from any of the ten hides which are on site. Also, keep an eye out for the historical gatehouse which, when open, offers unrivalled views of Lee and Stort Valley.
